Saturday Morning host James Martin, 48, took a trip down memory lane and took viewers back to the beginning of his career at Hostellerie De Plaisance – a Michelin star hotel located in France. The culinary professional spoke candidly about his ambitions to pursue his cooking career over 30 years ago.
While inside the five-star resort, the ITV favourite encountered a trainee chef and quizzed the young man on his pursuit to become a professional cook.
But James was left slightly taken aback after the trainee suggested he had moved to France to be with his girlfriend.
“The guys here at the Hostellerie De Plaisance have invited me into the kitchen. The very place where I got my first taste of working with food,” James began.
“And in a professional kitchen like this, there’s always a new kid on the block.”
Turning towards the trainee, James asked: “Where are you from?”
To which the young chef replied: “I’m from Sydney.”
The ITV favourite questioned further: “You like it here?”
“I love it here. I’ve been in France for about three years. I spent some time in Brittany,” the chef added.
James’ questioning did not stop there, as he continued: “So what brought you to this place?”
The chef chuckled: “My girlfriend lives nearby.”
James threw his arm in the air, as he muttered: “It’s always a girlfriend, isn’t it? But when I was training it was about the food.”
The small-screen star then joked: “It’s not about the girlfriend,” before giving the trainee a playful nudge.

The former Saturday Kitchen host then compared his own experience to the chefs-in-training today.
“When I was 12-years-old I used to be down here,” as he walked towards the other side of the kitchen.
James stood in front of a small unit which consisted of three cupboards and a stainless steel table.
He commented: “This was it. This was my home. Nowadays, they’ve got a brand new pastry section and it’s all air-conditioned. Really nice, but when I was here, this was it.”
Meanwhile, James previously opened up about why he is “very protective” over his personal life and relationship with girlfriend Louise Davies.
The chef previously kept their romance hidden for five years, before finally confirming they were an item in 2016.
“I keep my work and family completely separate,” James divulged. “When you’ve been [in the public eye] for as long as I have, for 25 years, you speak to a lot of people and they ask how do you do longevity?
“Some things just have to be private. If you open it all out, when it turns there is nowhere to hide,” he added to The Sun.
Saturday Morning airs today on ITV at 9.25am.
